Your average tent is great for catching some shuteye at a campsite, but you probably don’t want to hang out in one during the day. Not only are you missing all the wonderful nature you trekked so hard to find, but it’s pretty cramped in there too. Tendo, a concept from Paul van Laar, is a wonderful alternative. When it’s time to call it a night, Tendo transforms into a single-person tent so you can unfurl your sleeping bag and catch a few z’s. During the day, however, Tendo folds into a clever shelter that protects you from rain and sun without compromising the view. An inflatable mattress is built into the design, so you don’t have to worry about cushioning under your sleeping bag, and the entire thing is wind resistant and easy to deploy. The ingenuity is in the folding mechanism, which Paul van Laar developed so as not to add extra material. We think he pulled it off swimmingly.
